Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng (Choose the Right Price) is a Vietnamese game show based on the US version of The Price Is Right (1972 version). Originally, the show aired on VTV3 from 12 June (June 12), 2004 until 25 June (June 25), 2016 when it was replaced by Bàn Thắng Vàng (Golden Goal). With a total of 832 broadcasted episodes, this is the second version that has more than one host of the show after The Price is Right Thailand (which ended its run in 2020).
Filming[]
Unlike many versions, the filming of the show took place in several provinces during the same year (e.g.: Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Vinh Phuc,…) and was usually in a gymnasium. From 2018 until the show's cancellation, tapings took place at Tây Hồ District Gymnasium, Hanoi.

Broadcast history[]
2000s[]
- Originally the show was planned to be called Hãy Đoán Giá Đúng (Guess the Right Price), but the crew later changed it.
- The first set of Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng was the second one ever built by the show's crew. The original one was done in about two months, but it was later demolished as it wasn't accepted.
- The original light border for the show was made in a unique style: a Christmas string light is used, and a Chroma key is used to superimpose the audience camera angle onto the screen.
- For the Big Doors portion, the light borders were originally painted in red, but was later changed to green in 2006, and the green one was used in Ho Chi Minh City until 2012.
- Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng premiered on VTV3 on June 26, 2004, with Lại Văn Sâm hosted. In the first episode, the pricing games line-up was as follows:
- Túi ba gang [Three-Gang Bag] (It's in the Bag)
- Zíc Zắc (Plinko)
- Chơi golf [Play Golf] (Hole in One)
- Chìa khóa vàng [Gold Key] (Master Key)
- As of 2004, It's in the Bag had the highest cash payoff of all games, with a top prize of 16,000,000đ.
- The biggest winner under Lại Văn Sâm era was Trần Thúy Hằng in 2004. She won all 3 prizes in Master Key (a water pump, a camera, and a new motorcycle), won the showcase contains a table set, a refrigerator, and 5 cartons of milk. Her total winnings was around 50,000,000đ.
- In late 2004, Lưu Minh Vũ replaced Lại Văn Sâm as the host of the show.
- In June 2005, Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng aired its 1st anniversary special. The show begun with Lưu Minh Vũ, Lại Văn Sâm (the original host) and the models, all made the entrance with a large birthday cake, also featured confetti drops and a dance performance. The cake was also the first item up for bids, with an actual retail price of 1,600,000đ. But instead of receiving it, the winner of the first One Bid won the cash equivalent of the cake, and then the audience shared the cake. Not only that, the audience also shared a bagful of stuffed animals, when Lại Văn Sâm brought it out and then threw to the audience. Hole in One was known to be played in that special.
- Also in the same year, Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng started to tape in Ho Chi Minh City, and 5 games (Safe Crackers, Punch-A-Bunch, Golden Road, Line 'Em Up, Shell Game) debuted. Surprisingly enough, Punch-A-Bunch received its first win and five out of nine motorcycles had been won during that tape session.
- Then, in June 2006, the producers also planned for the show’s 2nd anniversary special, but it failed, so they decided to instead do specials for its milestones, when the show hits hundreds of episodes, which was a tradition that continued up until the end of the run. The 800th episode, though wasn't billed by the producers, aired in June 2020.
- In 2006, a completely new set was used in Hanoi, while in Ho Chi Minh City, the set remained the same.
- The Hanoi set had a gray-ish look, as the doorframes and the Home Base are all painted gray. Each doorframe, which are noticeably thinner than before, was curved on the top and had a huge trapezoid hung on above, making the set similar to that of the set of American version of Let's Make a Deal during the 60s. A set of light borders is also added to each panel of the Home Base, including the turntable.
- This set was used up until 2009.
- The showcase lecterns at the time were colored dark blue and pink respectively. In 2008, both podiums became identical (both colored gray).
- On the 2007 Tết special episode, every audience member received a 5,000₫ coin. Plinko, Grand Game and Golden Road was confirmed to be played on that special, with contestant named Hương won a motorcycle in Golden Road and the showcase (her total winnings is unknown).
- Later on, in 2009, the Hanoi set is once again overhauled, now with completely new One Bid podiums and LCD monitors showing the show's logo animation. It was first shown on the very first car special taped in a convention center. The showcase podiums were colored red, but prior to December 8, 2010, only the top frame (around the bid displays) is painted red, and these are the current lecterns. The Home Base is no longer seen, due to these changes, Master Key was retired.
- Starting when Vinasoy and Biscafun sponsored the show, the showcase contained an additional prize from the sponsored company (for Vinasoy, it would be soymilk for a year, for Biscafun, it's a gift card worth 3,000,000đ), Also, around 2010 - 2013, Vietcombank also gave the showcase winners a Mastercard. During this time, contestants are told to not include the additional prize in their bids.
- 2009 - 2011 was considered by many to be the heyday era of Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng, as the show was at the peak of its popularity, and also because they operated a bidding contest for viewers at home could have a chance to participate in the show's specials, where Hole in One was played for a brand-new car. This feature eventually boost the show's ratings, since winning a car on a game show is utterly unthinkable on Vietnamese TV during much of the 2000s. The car prize was known to be won only once. Lý Đình Tình made his putt in the 2nd nearest spot and won a Lifan car in the first special in September 2009, made him the biggest all-time winner in the show's history. Later on, Topcare sponsored the show and provide cars in special shows. Unfortunately, under Topcare's sponsorship, no cars out of 9 were known to be won and then Topcare left the show in 2012, before went out of business 2 years later.
2010s[]
- In June 22, 2011, the show made a major upgrade with a completely new setup. The One Bid podiums are redesigned to be somewhat similar to the 2001 French version. Also, from 2009 until May 2011, emojis were displayed on the screen after a pricing game's result was revealed (sad emoji if lose, happy emoji if win).
- Plinko was axed out of rotation in 2010 for maintenance and upgrade, probably due to the fact that contestants are guaranteed to win at least something, but was later revived in 2011.
- After the November 2010 taping session, the show retired Danger Price. Also, only a session later, Race Game was temporarily retired due to the introduction of Bonkers.
- Due to a new singing contest called Hợp ca tranh tài (Choir Competition a Vietnamese version of Clash of the Choirs which in turn was based on the Swedish reality competition series Korslaget meaning Driving Style) premiered on VTV3 in February 2012, another VTV3 game show Trò chơi âm nhạc (Music Game a Vietnamese version of The Lyrics Board, an Irish game show) replaced Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng into the 8:00 p.m. Wednesday time slot. As a result, VTV3 canceled Ô cửa bí mật (Secret Door a Vietnamese version of Let's Make A Deal, hosted by Trần Ngọc), which airs at noon Sunday, on February 19, 2012, and finally Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng replaced Ô cửa bí mật one week later.
- On May 27, 2012, Lưu Minh Vũ ended his seven-year run as the host and then Trần Ngọc replaced him. Back then, at age 24, he was the youngest host of any versions of Price. He introduced Money Game and Most Expensive.
- Many pricing games were retired due to the show stopped taping in Ho Chi Minh City in 2012, where the show was taped for years. They were It's in the Bag, Make Your Move, Clock Game, Safe Crackers (revived in June 2018), Secret 'X' (revived in 2016), Punch-A-Bunch (moved to Da Nang since 2013, later in Hanoi from 2015). Joker was retired in March 2011 due to low win rate. Pass the Buck was also retired after its last known playing on October 5, 2011.
- Then, once again, between 2012-2013, the show operated a contest, where contestants could play Grocery Game for a motorcycle (provided by Piaggio, said prize was usually worth around 40,000,000đ), and the motorcycle was won at least twice (once on January 27, 2013, the others were unknown).
- On March 30, 2014, the show’s 10th anniversary special aired. Trần Ngọc and the previous hosts entranced, but Lại Văn Sâm hosted the show instead.
- As an attempt to increase the ratings, from 2014 until the end of Trần Ngọc's tenure, Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng invited celebrities to be the fourth contestant to come on down on each show.
- Around 2014, Richy (a confectionery company) replaced Biscafun.
- On May 24, 2015, the show changed to a brand new opening credits with a bigger question mark.
- In March 2016, shortly after the 600th episode, the Big Doors were redesigned into checkerboard style, same as the current U.S. look.
- In April 2016, the show moved to 1:00 p.m. Saturday, and the 12:00 a.m. Sunday slot was replaced with Cố Lên Con Yêu (Come on Baby a Vietnamese version of Bet on Your Baby).
- In June 2016, after 620 episodes, Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng was announced on their official Facebook page that it would be on hiatus for the new time slot. When it ended on June 25, 2016, the show was replaced by Bàn Thắng Vàng (Golden Goal, a soccer-based game show) but it was revived since December 3, 2016.
- In October 2017, the show's logo was redesigned, similar to the U.S. version logo (Carey era, from Season 36 to Season 50), and a new light border was introduced.
- In May 2018, Hồng Phúc took over the show, and the set was overhauled for the last time, somewhat similar to the current U.S. version set. A video wall was added to the left side of the stage.
- Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng temporary stopped airing on June 14, 2006; July 26, 2006; February 6, 2008, February 2, 2011; October 13, 2013; October 6, 2018; May 4, 2019 and on August 15, 2020 due to state funerals.
- Then, on December 14, 2019, Phan Tuấn Tú (as Văn Két) and Nguyễn Hoàng Linh (as Thị Sắt) became the hosts for the show, and they would appear on the show as “Vợ chồng Két Sắt” (The Safe Couple).
2020: Final year and cancellation[]
- Episodes from February 15 to April 11, 2020 were taped prior to a 22-day nationwide isolation ordered by the government to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Since tapings were suspended, the episode aired on February 22, 2020 was rerun on Saturday, April 18. 2020. The following Saturday, the show went back to production.
- Due to no audience, the show introduced a brand new opening credits in May 2020, featuring some of its pricing games in play.
- For a short period during summer 2020, for the first time ever, and also a first for any versions of Price, Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng is taped outdoors, instead of inside a gymnasium. As a COVID protocol, the audience section was permanently abolished, and each show would only have seven contestants (a format which would later carry onto the American version during Season 49). The show returned to Tây Hồ District Gymnasium a few months later.
- Also, from June 27, 2020, a celebrity would appear on each show as a "panelist" to help contestants win their games.
- On September 5, 2020, Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng aired a special episode to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Vietnam Television.
- In early December 2020, it was announced that a new kids game show called Trạng Nguyên Nhí (Children's Poinsettia) will replace the show into 1:15/1:10/1:05/1 p.m. and other shows (including rebroadcasting programs from VTV) in time slot from January 2, 2021. This show was announced resulting that Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng would once again postpone its production for the first time in two years. But later on, VTV confirmed that the network has canceled the show after 16 ½ years on the air, having aired for 832 telecasts between June 2004 and December 26, 2020.
One Bid (Vòng Đoán Giá) [Price Prediction][]
Four contestants are selected by the announcer, and proceed to Contestant's Row with loud cheers, high fives, and fanfare. A prize is showcased, and each contestant gives a bid on it.
The four contestants bid in order from right to left, and must bid as close as they can to the actual retail price without going over. Contestants bid in thousands or millions of dong but no hundreds dong and below (as the retail prices are rounded off to the nearest thousand dong) and may not bid the same amount as any player bid previously for that prize.
The contestant who bids closest to the actual retail price without going over wins the prize and then gets to play a pricing game.
There is no bonus if a contestant get the perfect bid.
The contestant in the fourth podium begins the first One Bid. For subsequent rounds, a new audience member is then selected to fill the vacated seat on Contestant's Row, and gives the first bid.
If all four contestants overbid (the bids are higher than the prize's actual retail price), a short buzz tone sounds, the lowest bid is announced the bids are reset, and the process starts over (lower than the announced lowest bid) until one contestant gets a proper winning bid.
From October 26, 2019, the One Bid has a new version as sometimes there are two prizes displayed, and each contestant gives a bid on the total value of it.

Showcase Showdown (Quay Bánh Xe Số) [Spin the Wheel][]
The contestants are lined up by their winnings (highest to lowest). The object of the game is to come as close to 100 points (1,000,000đ, about $43) as you can without going over. Unlike the American version, anyone who is over 100 points will not lose the game, but his/her score would be deducted by 100 points to equal the amount which is less than 100 points (e.g.: his/her total is 120 points, he/she get 20 points (20,000đ)). Also, the second and final spinner who have a higher score than the first spinner can choose to either stay with what he/she landed on to advance to the Showcases or spin again to try to get the 1,000,000đ bonus.
Since July 28, 2018, a contestant in the first Showcase Showdown would draw one of the two cards, with the following rules:
- There are two cards, one conceals the show's logo with a picture of the Big Wheel, and the other contains a smiley Emoji face.
- If it is the show's logo card: The contestant will win an increased prize of 10,000,000đ (about $429) if he/she can get 100 points in the first spin.
- If it is the smiley face card: If a contestant get 100 points in the first spin, he/she will win 1,000,000đ and can decide to hug someone on the stage (can be the host, the announcer, the model,...).
- The bonus is applied for all contestants who have won their way up on stage in the day, but can only be awarded once.
Under Tuấn Tú and Hoàng Linh’s tenure, if a contestant wins the 10,000,000đ bonus, Hoàng Linh would often jokes as “I’ve never seen a man cheered when his wife lost her money!”
Showcase (Dành Cho Người Thắng Cuộc) [Game for the Winner][]
Near the end of the show, the 2 winners from the 1st & 2nd Showcase Showdown play the Showcase.
Similar to the multiplayer mode of The Price is Right: Decades, both contestants have to bid to the price of the showcase (usually worth from 10,000,000đ to 30,000,000đ; however many showcases are worth more than 30,000,000đ). The most expensive showcase offered was worth 107,890,000đ (nearly 150,000,000đ if the bonus prizes are included, which makes this the second-biggest prize ever offered in the show's history) in the June 28, 2015 episode and was not won. Contestants must come within a specific range of the retail price of the showcase without going over to win it.
In Lại Văn Sâm and Lưu Minh Vũ era, the range is 2,000,000đ. In Trần Ngọc era and Tuấn Tú - Hoàng Linh era, the range is different for each show (from 1,000,000đ to 3,000,000đ). In Hồng Phúc era, the winning range is 1,500,000đ.
If neither contestants meet this condition, both lose and the losing horns are played. If both contestants meet the above criteria, the contestant bids closer to the actual retail prize without going over wins the Showcase. Two contestants can bid the same amount and both meet the range above, in this case, two contestants both win and share the prizes, which happened only four times in the history of the show.
In some episodes, if the host knew that one contestant had won the showcase before reading the prize of the showcase, the host would call down an audience member to read the price of the showcase. After that, the audience member is given a small prize, and then the host reads the prize once again to announce the winner. This occasion only happened in Lại Văn Sâm era from 2004 and 2005 and Lưu Minh Vũ era from 2005 to 2009. The reason is that in the second Showcase winner winner under Lại Văn Sâm era in 2004, audience feedback that he should call down an audience member to read the price of the showcase to make the Showcase more luckier.
Play at Home Game[]
For the final six months on the air (June-December 2020), Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng operated a "Play at Home Game" contest. Viewers at home will try to bid on the day's showcase for a chance to win 8,000,000đ in cash. Any viewer who is 18 or older can attend.
- Viewers will bid on the showcase. After that, they must send a selfie photo with their TV sets (the scene seen on TV must be the current show at the time, and also must be before the showcase's price is revealed) via Facebook Messenger to VTV3's official fan page. As same as the on-stage contestants, they must come within a specific range of the price of the showcase without going over.
- If the showcase is won, the cash prize is forfeited and they can try again on the next show.
- Otherwise, anyone who meets the winning range and has a legal entry will be eligible to be chosen as the winner.
- The winner will be chosen randomly and will be announced on the following show (if any), and he/she will receive 8,000,000đ in cash.
Trivia[]
- Originally, the show was going to be titled Hay Doan Gia Dung (Guess the Right Price) however, the crew later change it.
- As of the inflation rate in Vietnam, cars usually have six or seven digits in the price, so the five-digit prizes are usually medium.
- On the Contestant's Row, each podium's display used to be empty when not in use during the show, and flashes whether a contestant won. Since 2014, the displays are set at "00000" and they do not flash anymore.
- Earlier episodes has cash games played for points (điểm, 1 điểm = 1,000đ)
- From about late 2017 to early Hồng Phúc era, as there are too few games in running (about 4-5 pricing games), a game is usually played twice in a show.
- There used to have rumors that Hoán đổi [Convert] (Switch?) and 3 dấu tích [3 Points] (3 Strikes) will be added to the line-up and a possibility of the revival of Túi ba gang [Three-Gang Bag] (It's in the Bag), but producers later denied that.
- In 2016, the show originally was replaced by Bàn Thắng Vàng (Golden Goal) before HCGĐ returned in the same year. In 2020, the revival was replaced by Trạng Nguyên Nhí (Children's Poinsettia).
Bloopers[]
Blurting Out the Price[]
- During the taping for the 2016 Tết special (aired February 7, 2016) on December 20, 2015, after the second item up for bid (a bag of rice) is displayed, host Trần Ngọc accidentally blurted out the retail price before contestants may bid on it, simply by saying "5 cân, 1 trăm 2" (meaning 5kg, 120,000đ). Everyone in the studio laughed at him, and then he apologized for that. Not surprisingly, another item up for bid was displayed, and the incident was edited out of broadcast.
Statistics & Records[]
- Under Tuấn Tú - Hoàng Linh era, Punch-A-Bunch had been won four times. The most recent win, also the last ever win on the Vietnamese version, occured on October 3, 2020.
- Plinko:
- Lưu Minh Vũ Era (2,000,000đ slot): The record during this era is not known due to lack of resources. A footage of a playing of the original version was once available on YouTube, but was taken down due to the user being terminated. On that playing, a male contestant got all 5 chips and won 1,500,000đ.
- Lưu Minh Vũ Era (5,000,000đ slot): Again, not too many footages has been found, but on one video on YouTube, Nguyễn Thị Thúy Hà won 5,700,000đ. A few months later, college student Nguyễn Thị Thanh Thanh came close with 5,600,000đ. She would later go on to win 1,000,000đ on the Big Wheel.
- Trần Ngọc Era: A female contestant got 4 chips and won 11,100,000đ on March 20, 2016, and she was the all-time Plinko record holder.

- A college student got all 5 chips and won absolutely nothing in 2011, and she is one of the known contestants to wipeout in this game.
- Race Game: a woman won all four prizes in just 10 seconds in 2009, currently holding the world record outside the U.S.
- Grand Game: 2 contestants in 2014 both lost on the very first pick after both ignoring the audience.
- Golden Road: 2 elderly contestants (Bách from November 24, 2010, Sỹ from April 6, 2011) and Hằng (2007 Tet Special) are the only known winners under Lưu Minh Vũ era. All three would later won the showcase, with Bách winning almost 100,000,000đ in prizes.

Theme[]
- Main Theme: Come On Down (1976 U.S. version)
- Ending Theme: Come On Down (Australian version).
The Vietnamese used both U.S. and Australian cues, unlike most versions of Price. This is the only known version to still use the 1976 "Come on Down" theme and many of the 1976 Score Productions cues. Many Australian cues are also used. Surprisingly, the wheel spin sound in Showcase Showdown was the sound that was used in the Australian version of Wheel of Fortune.
Recently, when Tuấn Tú and Hoàng Linh took over the show, some themes from the Kirby games can be heard during the show.
Footages of Episodes[]
- Before VTV introduced on demand videos, nearly none of the episodes were leaked on YouTube. However there are still footages found during its earlier episodes:
- 2004: VTV showed 3 short clips from Lại Văn Sâm's era during the mid-2010s (one came from the show's 10th anniversary special, one came from VTV Kết nối (Connect VTV) with trailer for the 10th anniversary special, and the last one came from Cà phê sáng (a Breakfast-programme on VTV3 that broadcasts at 6:30am) during an interview with Trần Dũng, who appeared on the show 20 times between 2010 and 2014, made it to the stage in February 2014 but lost on Bonkers). On February 2023, TVAction Channel uploaded a fragment of an 2004 Lại Văn Sâm's era episode (Make Your Move, all 2 Showcase Showdown rounds, third One Bid round and Showcase). One month later, TVAction Channel uploaded several commercial clips of the 2004 Christmas Special, in which one of these videos show that Lưu Minh Vũ is the host of this special, not Lại Văn Sâm.
- 2005: Mabel's Fanboy uploaded short audio fragments of both May 12 (It's in The Bag short gameplay) and October 20 (Showcase finals). Other than those no other footages are leaked.
- 2006: Golden-Road.net Golden Gallery is home to about 160 photos came from Hãy chọn giá đúng, taken from around Summer this year. One full episode hasn't been uploaded in 2016 by one contestant's daughter. On April 2022, GIA HUY uploaded a fragments of a 2006 episode which was taping in Hanoi (First One Bid round and full Master Key gameplay)
- Several episodes between 2015-2017 used to be available on VTV's YouTube channel.
