The light border on screen during the opening

Lightbox

Light border. The center of the border is black because that is chroma keyed when the camera is shooting it.

The light border was introduced in 1975. It displayed three sentences by just zooming in or by flipping horizontally; usually the first two disappeared quickly after flipping in, while the third flipped back out; this was changed when Drew Carey took over as host in 2007 (with each individually flipping in and out) and then discontinued for good by the start of Season 38. Once all four players got called to Contestant's Row, the light border disappeared by zooming in off screen as the logo zoomed in, and until early Season 34, it zoomed out with the logo at the halfway point of the show. All of the light borders seen below are recreations.

From 1975-2007, the light border was chroma keyed through a camera. In 2008, the border graphics were transitioned to digital computer-animated graphics. On rare occasions, the camera panned too far, you can see the light border.

On rare occasions, contestants run up onto the stage during the opening and if they wander too far, you may see the light border in the background. Notice that the camera is how the light border was how it appears on screen for many years until the show went digital graphics.
