The Price is Right: The Barker Era is an online streaming TV channel devoted to airing the legendary Bob Barker version of The Price is Right.

Description[]

On November 30, 2020, it was announced that both Pluto TV and Fremantle's Buzzr would team up to announce the launch of the brand new channel where it aimed at the much beloved and longest-running classic game show's heyday in the 1980s while celebrating Barker's hosting skills.

Additionally, you'll hear the voice (and seen in some brief cameo appearances here and there) by the late and legendary Johnny Olson and Rod Roddy, along with appearances by former The Price is Right models (or "Barker's Beauties") of Janice Pennington, Dian Parkinson, and Holly Hallstrom.

On November 1, 2021, it was announced that Redbox had signed content deal with Fremantle to bring The Price is Right: The Barker Era to its service. The channel launched on Redbox, and also on Amazon Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) on December 1, 2021. Since then, many streaming services have also carried the channel: Roku Channel in February 2022, Xumo in May 2022, Vizio in November 2022, Samsung TV Plus and Plex in February 2023, Sling TV's Freestream in June 2023, Google TV in August 2023, TCLtv+ in November 2023, LG Channels by March 2024, and Philo in September 2024.

Starting from June 13, 2022, episodes are available on-demand on Pluto TV, on Roku from February 27, 2023, and on Tubi from January 22, 2024. Tubi temporarily dropped the on-demand episodes in early February 2024 before bringing them back later in June.

Starting from March 2024, the channel is featured on Gaggl where Twitch streamers can hold live watching parties, and viewers can play along by entering answers in chats.

Trivia[]

  • The first episode to air on the channel originally aired on September 15, 1982 (#4583D), mostly known as the eighth episode of Season 11.
  • As of Septembeer 1, 2024, 705 episodes have aired on the channel, spanning between September 5, 1972 (#0012D, aired out of order on September 6) to July 20, 1973 (#0465D), then skipping to Season 11 (#4581D, September 13, 1982) through midway into Season 14 (#5944D, January 9, 1986) and then a one-off episode - April 16, 1986 (#6083D).
    • The sixty episodes from Season 1, spanning between #0012D and #0465D, originally aired from November 2023 to January 2024 as a special tribute for what would've been Bob Barker's 100th birthday. These episodes were added to the start of the rotation on January 25, 2024.
    • The airing of #6083D originally aired to coincide with a mini marathon for The Price is Right at Night: Redemption. This episode was added to the tail end of the rotation on April 19, 2023, marking the point where it resets to the 1972 episode drop.
  • On January 25, 2024, the Season 1 episodes started airing again in a continuous block, but this was after the rotation had already reset back to 1982 the prior day. The following day, after those episodes aired, it appeared the rotation jumped to the beginning of their 1982 episodes. This seems to suggest the rotation was reset on the 25th to start with the Season 1 episodes. After #6083D's airing on February 18, 2024, the rotation started over with the 1972 episodes again.
  • The channel has continued to maintain Barker's request to not air any episodes that offered fur coats as prizes. The second week of Season 11 in 1982 marks the starting point where all fur prizes were officially banned from the show. Although episodes from the first 10 seasons have been airing on the channel since November 2023, the practice of "cherry-picking" out episodes that featured fur coats will continue - including, unsurprisingly, the first episode (#0011D).
  • It has also been speculated that episodes with Bump as a pricing game also aren't being aired, possibly due to the suggestive nature of the game, and/or the circumstances that led to its retirement, however, as of June 2024, the episodes with the game have aired as normal. One playing from October 4, 1985 (#5825D) was originally aired on April 3, 2023, most likely by accident. While Bump had been intentionally skipped for much of the channel's existence except for the #5825D incident, it may be possible that the channel has now reversed their stance on Bump.
  • Episodes are shown with no edits aside from removing the ticket plugs, presumably since the address is no longer used for ticket requests. This practice is also used for Home Viewer Showcases, The Phone Home Game and Play-Along.
  • The channel's icon, a Plinko chip, is shown onscreen during each episode in about the same position the CBS Eye graphic would be displayed during the 1990s and the early 2000s. The icon temporarily disappeared on February 2, 2022, then returned the next day.
  • This was the era when Bob started phasing out his tradition of kissing every female guest.
